It is argued that friends have a greater influence on teenagers than parents and teachers do. I completely agree with this statement because this is a feature of puberty.
The influence of teachers and parents become weaker in the formative stage as adolescents are more interested in new concepts. Young people would like to develop similar interests in music, idols, and dressing styles with their friends not only because of the need to maintain friendship but also the willingness to keep up with the trend. Compared with parents and teachers whose views and hobbies seem to be outdated and unappealing, friends' tastes are more fashionable and attractive. A typical example is the obvious difference in music preference among generations. It is just the generation gap that prevents the youngsters from inheriting values from the older generation.
Peer pressure is another reason why juveniles are more influenced by friends. Teenagers would imitate their friends' behavior to gain recognition from people of similar age. This can work as an internal motivation which could be stronger than the external encouragement from teachers and parents, driving students to make more efforts and achieve better academic achievements together with their friends. Unfortunately, research shows that peer pressure is also the major incentive of youth crime. Many young criminals get involved in fight, theft, or bullying simply because they mistake these as being supportive of their friends.
In conclusion, I totally agree that teachers and parents are not as influential as friends to young people due to the generation gap and peer pressure.
